GREECE: CHILDREN ON THE MOVE | July - September 2026

What's the situation for children on the move in Greece lately?

Children affected by displacement or migration in Greece continue to face growing risks as reception systems struggle to keep pace with arrivals.

By late September 2026, more than 28,000 people arrived in Greece seeking protection. Children arriving in hotspots such as Crete continue to face inadequate reception conditions, delays in accessing asylum procedures, and barriers to critical child protection safeguards.

Our joint brief with Save the Children examines:

  • Rising arrivals and reception gaps in Crete
  • The first impacts of the EU Pact on Migration and Asylum on children
  • Concerns around age assessment and access to legal guidance
  • The growing number of children accused of smuggling
  • Why protecting civic space is essential to safeguarding children's rights

The Joint Brief on the situation of the rights of the children on the move for July-September 2026 is published by the Greek Council for Refugees (GCR) and Save the Children.
