European Climate Foundation

Date of implementation:

1/1/2025 – 31/12/2025

Objectives

The first phase of the project, as outlined in the report “Refugees for the Climate” by GCR and WWF Greece, highlighted the need for a human rights-based approach to climate-induced cross-border displacement. Rather than focusing solely on projections and numbers, it emphasized the need to safeguard the dignity and rights of displaced persons. The Eastern Mediterranean, already experiencing the severe effects of climate change, demonstrates the urgent need for preventive policy measures.

The second phase integrates refugees’ own experiences, particularly addressing the gender dimensions of climate migration, to develop a more holistic understanding of displacement challenges. The project aims to support a comprehensive protection framework, advocating for legal reform that incorporates human rights and climate principles. It seeks to bring the voices of the most vulnerable to the forefront of policy-making processes.

Activities

The project unfolds in two main stages: Research (Months 1–7) and Advocacy (Months 8–12).

A. Research
-Document the extent to which climate change has influenced refugees’ decisions to flee to Greece and Europe.
-Conduct surveys and in-depth interviews with refugees and asylum seekers in Greece and other countries.
-Analyze existing data to correlate climate events with migration patterns.
-Produce a comprehensive report with findings and recommendations.

B. Advocacy
-Raise awareness about the challenges faced by climate-displaced people.
-Promote policy reform to ensure recognition and protection of climate migrants.
-Share personal stories to humanize the impacts of climate change.
-Advocate for institutional responses to address current legal protection gaps.
