Objectives

The "Caring to Include" project is a three-year collaboration led by the Dutch Council for Refugees, involving six European partner organizations from Hungary, Estonia, Malta, Cyprus, Greece, and Croatia. The project aims to support the social inclusion of refugees and migrants by addressing the impacts of trauma and other stressors. At the same time, it seeks to enhance the mental resilience of staff and volunteers working daily with vulnerable groups, preventing burnout.

Activities

Establishment of a Sustainable Community of Practice (CoP):
Strengthening collaboration among NGOs across Europe by exchanging ideas and experiences on the mental well-being of staff and volunteers, as well as trauma-informed approaches to supporting refugees and migrants

Formation of a Refugee Focus Group (RFG):
Creating a group of 14 individuals with refugee backgrounds from partner countries to participate in project meetings, sharing lived experiences and insights to inform the development of improved support methods.

Development of Mental Health and Self-Care Tools:
Designing innovative tools to promote the mental health and self-care of NGO staff and volunteers, alongside methods for supporting refugees and migrants. These tools will be published on a dedicated digital platform for wider use.

Implementation of Good Practices:
Adopting and integrating innovative and effective methods to improve the quality of service delivery for refugees and migrants into the organizational structures and processes of NGOs.

Results

The project aims to provide long-term, trauma-informed support for refugees and migrants while improving the mental well-being of staff and volunteers working with these vulnerable groups. By developing and documenting support tools on a digital platform, the project ensures the dissemination of good practices and enables their use by other organizations active in refugee and migrant protection and integration, contributing to the establishment of sustainable support frameworks.
