The latest\u00a0<\/strong>European Commission report on T\u00fcrkiye<\/a>\u00a0counters Greece\u2019s designation of T\u00fcrkiye as a \u201csafe third country\u201d for refugees, enacted through a\u00a0<\/strong>national list of safe third countries<\/a>\u00a0based on which more than 7,000 asylum claims from nationals of Syria, Afghanistan, Somalia, Pakistan and Bangladesh have been dismissed as inadmissible.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The European Commission makes detailed reference to obstacles facing refugees\u2019 access to international protection, to breaches of the principle of non-refoulement and to human rights violations in detention, as well as to broader rule of law backsliding in T\u00fcrkiye.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

In view of the mandatory reassessment by Greece of the designation of T\u00fcrkiye as a \u201csafe third country\u201d in November, 15 civil society organisations have written to the Greek Asylum Service, the Ministers of Migration and Asylum and of Foreign Affairs, and the European Commission, urging them to:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

  1. Immediately repeal the national list of safe third countries set out by JMD 42799\/2021, as amended by JMD 458568\/2021.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  2. Publish previous and upcoming opinions of the Director of the Asylum Service regarding the designation of safe third countries, which should be made available to asylum seekers subject to the application of the list according to the\u00a0European Commission<\/a>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  3. Stop dismissing asylum applications as inadmissible based on the \u201csafe third country\u201d concept.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n
