{"id":11189,"date":"2025-05-27T07:58:28","date_gmt":"2025-05-27T07:58:28","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/gcr.gr\/?p=11189"},"modified":"2025-05-27T07:58:35","modified_gmt":"2025-05-27T07:58:35","slug":"nea-ekthesi-toy-ellinikoy-symvoylioy-gia-toys-prosfyges-esp-eyropaika-kondylia-kai-paraviaseis-themeliodon-dikaiomaton-stin-ellada","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/gcr.gr\/en\/news\/item\/nea-ekthesi-toy-ellinikoy-symvoylioy-gia-toys-prosfyges-esp-eyropaika-kondylia-kai-paraviaseis-themeliodon-dikaiomaton-stin-ellada\/","title":{"rendered":"New Report by the Greek Council for Refugees (GCR): European Funds and Fundamental Rights Violations in Greece"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><em>Athens, 27 May 2025<\/em><\/strong> \u2013 A new report published today by the Greek Council for Refugees (GCR) outlines how European funding intersects with violations of fundamental rights in Greece.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The report, prepared within the framework of the European project <strong>FURI<\/strong> (\"<a href=\"https:\/\/furi.gcr.gr\/\">EU Funds for Fundamental Rights<\/a>\u201d), which is an initial assessment of the country's compliance with the EU Funds' regulatory framework, which requires full respect for fundamental rights.\nTo varying degrees, it identifies a range of rights violations affecting vulnerable social groups, such as asylum seekers, persons with disabilities, and Greek Roma, due to policies and practices implemented, in part, with European Union (EU) funds.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Among these, pushbacks, for which Greece has been recently <a href=\"https:\/\/gcr.gr\/en\/news\/press-releases\/item\/katadiki-tis-elladas-gia-proti-fora-gia-pushback-ston-evro-apo-to-eyropaiko-dikastirio-dikaiomaton-toy-anthropoy\/\">condemned by the European Court for Human Rights<\/a>(ECtHR), constitute a major issue, as are ongoing obstacles to accessing asylum and the failure to ensure dignified reception conditions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Despite progress made, efforts in the field of inclusive education and independent living still fail to meet UN standards, risking the reinforcement of segregation experienced by persons with disabilities, with the contribution of EU Funds.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Lastly, based on examples from Greece and other states, the report draws attention to the need for constant vigilance to ensure that European resources directed towards Roma inclusion do not lead, as in the past, to conditions of segregation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>&nbsp;\u201cDespite the strengthened EU regulatory framework, which requires European funds to be used with full respect for rights, as enshrined in the EU Charter of Fundamental Rights and the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities, significant challenges remain in the effective implementation of this framework in practice.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u2014 Spyros-Vlad Oikonomou, Advocacy &amp; Communications Officer at the Greek Council for Refugees (GCR)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The report concludes with an indicative number of recommendations, most prominent among which is the need for continuous and thorough monitoring, as well as the use of available legal tools in cases of non-compliance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The FURI report on Greece is available on the FURI project website at <a href=\"https:\/\/furi.gcr.gr\/\">https:\/\/furi.gcr.gr\/<\/a>, as well as at <a href=\"https:\/\/gcr.gr\/en\/gcr-reports\/item\/themeliodi-dikaiomata-kai-eyropaikes-chrimatodotiseis-furi\/\">the website<\/a> of GCR.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Notes to the editors<\/strong>:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The \u2018EU Funds for Fundamental Rights\u2019 (FURI) project is a transnational initiative funded by the EU\u2019s Citizens, Equality, Rights and Values (CERV) programme (grant agreement number 101143162 - FURI - CERV-2023-CHAR-LITI).
